My third post today (I’m avoiding work):
Having good quality photos is a must if you want to take part in any of the online dating services or even Craigslist. Although you don’t have to post a photo in your initial Craigslist ad, you should have 2 or 3 photos to send to anyone who replies to your ad.
Recently I refused to meet up with someone who responded to an ad of mine on Craigslist because he refused to send me any photos. He made a bunch of excuses for why he didn’t have any photos of himself. But in today’s world of digital cameras, there is no excuse. I just don’t feel comfortable meeting someone who isn’t willing or confident enough to send me a photo, especially when I have given them the courtesy of sending 1 or more photos of myself.
Most importantly, the photos you send or post on your profile should be clear, with good resolution. It’s best not to use camera phone photos or web cam stills because they look cheapo. The photos should be recent – from at least the last 5 years. Preferably you should have some photos from the past year. Now you may be saying to yourself “but in my most recent photos I look like a fat balding mess.” Well… then you might have other problems that need to be addressed (or might not, if you’re confident with yourself the way you are). But it’s best to be honest and upfront. Fuzzy photos or pics where you are only 1 mm tall signify that you’re hiding something.
You should have at least 1 photo that is a head shot and at least 1 that is a full body shot (clothed, please).
It is also good to have a photo that shows you with other people, for example a group of friends. But please do not post photos with anyone blacked out or scratched out. This looks really tacky. If you can’t crop the other person out properly then don’t use the photo.
Personally, I find professional studio photos (ala Sears Portrait Studio) to be a bit creepy, especially for single adults. It shouldn’t be that hard to find a friend, coworker, or family member to take some natural-looking, everyday photos of you rather than have to pay a professional and pose in front of canned backgrounds.
And please, please, please stop taking photos of yourself in the bathroom mirror. Either get a friend to take your picture or figure out how to use your camera’s self-timer to take your own photo.
Photos from your travels or showing you partaking in a hobby are good. Not good are photos of you staring into your web cam looking like you’ve been playing World of Warcraft for the last 17 hours and could snap and kill anyone at any second.
Good luck out there.
